PHYSICIAN INVOLVEMENT

What do physician volunteers do?

Our physicians work closely with medical students to provide free trauma-informed medical and psychiatric evaluations and document evaluation findings in a legal affidavit. Our physician volunteers also provide student volunteers with valuable mentorship and training in medical evaluations, trauma-informed care, and working with interpreters.

What is the time commitment?

There is no minimum time commitment required to be a physician volunteer at the UWSOM Asylum Evaluation Clinic. We typically hold two clinics a month and ask physicians to be present for 1-2 evaluations (approximately 30 minutes to an hour) as well as spend time with their assigned medical student scribe debriefing and drafting the legal affidavit.

How do physicians sign up to volunteer?

Step 1: Email asylumeval@uw.edu to express your interest.

Step 2: Complete a background check and participate in 3-4 hours of training in medical evaluation and affidavit preparation.

Step 3: Observe one medical evaluation with another of our clinic's physicians.

Step 4: Start providing evaluations!
