MEDICAL STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

IMG_4829.HEIC

Please note: At this time, our clinic is only able to accept University of Washington medical student volunteers.

What do medical student scribes do?

Student scribes assist physician evaluators by documenting the encounter from start to finish. Evaluations are 1-2 hours long, depending on each client’s specific needs. Afterward, scribes work with the evaluating physician to document findings in a legal affidavit. Students and physicians typically finalize the affidavit together over email within 48 hours of the evaluation.

How do medical students get involved as a scribe?

Student volunteers will complete a two hour asynchronous training and quiz. Once you complete the required training, you are cleared to start scribing!

How do medical students join the clinic leadership team?

Medical students may also join our clinic leadership team. Applications are distributed every September from asylumeval@uw.edu

Our clinic is comprised of the following leadership teams:

  • Build partnerships with local community organizations to develop robust referral network for clients

  • Maintain communication between student leaders, physicians, scribes, lawyers, clients, and other partners

Scheduling

  • Work with students, local asylum coordinator, evaluators, and attorneys to schedule asylum evaluations

  • Coordination interpreter services to ensure they are available and appropriately credentialed

Continuation of Care

  • Perform a post-evaluation interview with the clients to assess needs and facilitate referrals to resources

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Perform basic analysis on clinic data including client demographics, resource referrals, asylum case outcomes, and volunteer feedback

  • Draft reports and outreach materials to share clinic updates with relevant stakeholders
