What is a medical evaluation?

A "medical evaluation" is when you tell your story to a doctor to document evidence for your asylum case. The doctor will ask you questions about your history and experiences. They may examine your body to document physical evidence of your experiences. The evaluation is completely confidential. We can provide free interpretation services, and the evaluation can be conducted in any language.

What is the purpose of a medical evaluation?

The purpose of the medical evaluation is to collect medical evidence that supports your asylum application. The doctor writes down the medical evidence they find in a formal legal document. The legal document is called an "affidavit" and can be included in your asylum application.

How much does the medical evaluation cost?

The medical evaluations in our clinic are free of charge. Doctors and medical students volunteer to work in our clinic. Our community partners and sponsors donate the funding and resources we need to operate.

What happens when I visit the Asylum Evaluation Clinic?

When you arrive at our clinic, a team member will take you and any guests you bring to the waiting room where you will wait until your appointment begins. When your appointment begins, you will go with the doctor to an examination room. We can provide free telephone interpreters in any language. The doctor will ask more questions about you and the events in your life. They may ask to examine your body for physical evidence of your experiences. Your lawyer will let you know what type of questions and examinations to expect during your appointment. A medical student will be in the examination room and will take notes during your appointment. Their notes ensure that the legal document is accurate and complete. The evaluation document is confidential and all of your information is kept between you, your lawyer, the doctor, and the student scribe. After your medical evaluation, you will meet with a different medical student in another room. If you are interested, the student can help connect you to resources and organizations in the Seattle area.

What do you share with my lawyer?

Our clinic team works with your lawyer. Your lawyer schedules your appointment day and time. We can work together to arrange free transportation and childcare.

Before your appointment, your lawyer will send our clinic team a summary of your history and why you are applying for asylum. A few days before your appointment, your lawyer will send you a packet of information. It will contain our location and directions to get to the clinic. The packet will also contain information about what you should expect during your appointment.

Please reach out to your lawyer if you have any questions, concerns, or needs. Your lawyer can share that information with our clinic team. We want to be prepared to give you the best support we can.

How do I get to the clinic?

Your lawyer will share our location and directions on how to get to the clinic.

If it is difficult for you to travel to our clinic, please let your lawyer know. We can arrange transportation for you by bus, taxi, Uber, or Lyft. We can pay for the cost of transportation to and from our clinic; the trip will be free for you.

¿Cómo puedo llegar a la clínica?

Can I bring my family?

Yes, you are welcome to bring family members or a friend with you to the clinic. For some people, friends and family provide important support. We will ask your family and friends to wait in the waiting room during the medical evaluation.

Do you offer childcare?

Yes, we provide free childcare at our clinic. You are welcome to bring your children. Please notify your lawyer before your visit if you need childcare at your appointment.

We have a network of community partners. Our partners include International Rescue Committee, Northwest Immigration Rights Project, and Refugees Northwest.

What happens if I have not yet requested asylum? What happens if I still don't have a lawyer?

If you have not yet applied for asylum, or if you do not yet have a lawyer to represent you, you can email us at asylumeval@uw.edu. We can connect you with our community partners to help you through the asylum application process. We do not schedule appointments directly with clients.
